King Leads Rockstar Team by Example
28 Feb 2011
It doesn’t get much better than this.
The high-profile MXDK Rockstar Yamaha Motocross Team is now on top in all four classes after the second of four rounds in this year’s New Zealand Motocross Championships near Morrinsville on Sunday.
Motueka’s Josh Coppins finished overall runner-up in the MX1 class at the Patetonga track on Sunday but this was still good enough for him to extend his lead at the top of the championship standings.
Coppins is now six points clear at the top, ahead of new No.2 rider Cody Cooper, of Mount Maunganui.
And it was another truly dominating performance from Waitakere’s Ethan Martens, who topped the podium in both the 125cc and under-21 championship standings with a stunning hat-trick of wins on Sunday.
But a lot of the chatter in the pits was centred on the performance of semi-retired MXDK Rockstar Yamaha Team boss Darryll King, racing a two-stroke YZ250 against the young guns on their 250cc four-strokes in the talent-packed MX2 (250cc) class.
Only an occasional racer these days, as the 42-year-old father-of-two concentrates instead on team management, it was a much-debated and last-minute decision for him to even enter the national series.
But now, after winning the day at the Patetonga track on Sunday, King is top of the MX2 standings.
King finished 1-3-2 in his three races on Sunday, leapfrogging the two Australian “stars” and taking over the championship lead. King had been third overall at the start of the day, 12 points behind Kiama’s Cody Mackie and four points behind Sydney’s Daniel McCoy, but now he’s on top, three points clear of Mackie.
“As a team manager I am naturally overjoyed to be leading all the classes,” said King afterwards.
“As for my one performance, I just rode sensibly and didn’t take too many risks today and that seemed to get the job done. My energy levels were getting a bit low near the end of the day and I’m surprised that I could beat these riders on a track that would have favoured the four-stroke bikes.”
In addition to the chart-topping feats of Coppins, Martens and King, two other MXDK Rockstar Yamaha Team riders also scored solid points at the weekend.
Hamilton’s Hayden Clark (Yamaha YZ450F) finished fifth overall in the MX1 class on Sunday, lifting him from 10th in the championship standings to sixth overall.
King’s younger brother Damien King, meanwhile, finished fourth overall in the MX2 class on Sunday and he has now moved up one spot from seventh to sixth in the series standings.
There is now a small break before round three, set for Rotorua on March 20, with the fourth and final round scheduled for Taranaki on March 27.

DK wins Australia Vets Championship

Yamaha continued its stellar 2010 motocross season taking two Australian Veteran’s Motocross Championship over the weekend.

Held in conjunction with the final round of the Rockstar MX Nationals, Cameron Taylor on board his Geoff Taylor YZ250, took the 35- 39 years class while New Zealand warrior Darryl King won the over 40s division.

Darryl King proved that he is man of steel after overcoming a huge crash that decimated his bike and body on Saturday to return to the track and win the Over 40 Vets class on Sunday. King high-sided his YZ450F in a fall on Saturday and had servere pain and bruising in his legs and neck.

But after a quick ocean dip, King was back at the track Sunday morning straightening out his bike and preparing to hit the track. Like Taylor, he showed plenty of class to dominate the old timers division and won all three motos in convincing fashion.

“That crash on Saturday really took the wind out of me, but I went down to the ocean and just stood around in the surf and it felt much better. Modern bikes have so much power that you really have to respect them or things can get nasty in a hurry.”

“I would like to thank Ray Howard at Yamaha and the Yamaha Under 19 team for their support whilst I have been in Australia this year. They have made my life pretty easy over here and also to WEM for running the Vets classes,” King said.

DK'S CHANGE TO ALPINESTAR GEAR AND PROTECTION LINEUP

DK and Damian to use Alpinestar Protection gear

"As everyone knows I have been involved with the Leatt neck brace right from the start here in New Zealand. Protection for me is number one when racing motocross.
I have had my injuries from not wearing the right protection and now when I ride, I make sure and wear all the equipment I have in my gear bag!
I had a fantastic opportunity to work with Alpinestars both in New Zealand and internationally as well."

Alpinestars are the leader in protection for motorcycling and I could not turn down this excellent chance to help development new protection products for them and also use there fantastic Bionic neck brace and A10 Chest protector.

I will no longer be wearing Leatt brace or distributing the brace.  I would like to say thank you to Leatt for there support and Paris and Sue for there excellent work here in New Zealand.

I have worn Tech 8 boots for most of my professional career and have recently changed boots to the latest model A star Tech 8. The new boot offers more flexibility, a lighter weight with the same protection. The bottom line I am even more protected than ever before and I might even be able to keep racing as a pro for a few more years yet.

Working closely with Alpinestars and Crown Kiwi here in New Zealand will mean all our race team riders Damian King and Hayden Clarke will be better protected and able to race every weekend at the highest level.

I am really excited about this new challenge!
